The magnificent Kauhako Crater is well known for its remnant summer-deciduous dry forest. This `ohe makai and wiliwili forest is one of the very few remaining along the windward coast of the Hawaiian Islands. Besides, there is a beautiful lake at the bottom of the crater. This spectacular lake is not than 1 acre (0.004 sq km) in surface area and is over 800 ft (243.8 m) deep. This lake is known for its unique biological, chemical, and morphological characteristics. It is home to a rare sub-species of shrimps.
There are over 20 lava tubes and caves near the Kauhako Crater. The most popular one is the Kauhako Trench. This collapsed lava tube extends up to 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the crater. This trench has rare, partially inventoried flora and fauna and a number of endemic invertebrate species.
Also, there are a number of graves at the Kauhako Crater. These graves are thought to be linked to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at the turn of the century. Both historic cemeteries and the pre-contact Hawaiian burials can be found in this area.Â
